The amount of training a guard dog receives depends heavily on what the client wants the dog to do. Training time increases if the dog is expected to recognize approved individuals, perform food refusal, clear a perimeter, or also function as a protection dog.

For a basic guard dog, training requirements are relatively low compared to a protection dog. These dogs may work from a fixed area, chain, fence line, or defined perimeter. While the dog should generally be at least a year and a half old, the total training hours required are significantly less than those needed for a fully trained protection dog.
